Millions of monarch butterflies begin arriving in Mexico's internationally renowned reserve as part of their annual migration to Mexico's forested mountains in Michoacan but biologists fear stroms this year will affect their numbers.
Million of monarch butterflies have started arriving at a butterfly sanctuary in the central Mexican state of Michoacan. An anual spectacle that draws tourist, scientists and local alike. The monarch butterflies flee the cold winters of Canada and Northern United States and Travel thousands of miles to hibernate and reproduce in temperature woods of central Mexico.
Hundreds of trees crowded with butterflies can be seen along the reserve. Nevertheless, the fabled monarch butterflies this year faced new threat from severe storms that devasted some sanctuary forest in Mexico, according to conservation groups. The nature conservancy said that storm damage in Mexico's 13.000 hectare ( 32.124 acre ) monarch reserve is yet another blow to the fragile butterflies.
