The 7 point 2 richter scale earthquake that triggered a tsunami on October 25 th 2010 has caused the land suface in South Mentawai increased to about 90 centimeters. The coordinator of the central operation control of disaster management or B-P-B-D of West Sumatera, Ade Edward said that the based on satelite images ( 11/11 ).
The quake had effected the contoure of Pagai island in Mentawai islands specially in the south side. However the change of the land surface has not been equal. A rise in the land surface in Mentawai has been happening since the quake on September 12th 2007 which measured 8 point 4 in the richter scale. Visually Ade said it showed that the rise of the land surface in Pagai island in the south side would total about less than a meter high.
The rise in the land surface is never the same. There are a number of land in Mentawai showed a drop in its land surface. Currently a research team from LIPI is still measuring the movement of the land since the October 25th quake in Mentawai. The measuring of the land change in Mentawai is done by using a number of tools such as GPS with high accuracy.
In early predictions Mentawai will experience a rise in its land surface after the quake that shook the area three weeks ago. This can be seen by aerial footages that showed the coast line shifted from its earlier spot.
